Masterclass: Meet the Falaj of Al Bithnah

Discover the fascinating history (and future) of the traditional falaj.

About this activity

Old is gold, especially when it comes to the falaj irrigation systems. Invented 3,000 years ago, these communal water systems show how working together and sharing resources is good for the entire ecosystem – human, plant and animal alike.

By restoring the flow of water in these open water channels, we can make a positive impact for the farms and local communities of areas such as Al Bithnah, while also contributing to the biodiversity of the region.

Join the masterclass to learn more about the natural heritage of falajs and the how ecotourism can lead us towards a more inclusive and eco-friendly world.

Which area of Impact does it contribute to?

Our goal is bigger than helping nature survive. We are restoring urban and wild spaces to make sure that animals and plants thrive.

This activity supports our objectives to:

  • Restore 20,000 m2 of natural habitats (that’s nearly the size of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque complex in Abu Dhabi!)

  • Create at least one Nature Trail in the UAE by 2022 to give local biodiversity a safe home and encourage more people to spend time in nature.

Join the mission to Protect our Pollinators.

Very informative session. Gained sufficient knowledge on Natural irrigation systems and its importance.

One of the informative sessions to know about the irrigation system in UAE, which is known as Falaj refers to an underground channel that ensures the supply of water to the crops. Thank you!
